ABOUT

The project Every Mouth Must Be Fed, presented by Pane Per Poveri, unfolds as a series of laboratories dedicated to the possible realization of a sustainable creative canteen, realized with the contribution of artists active in different areas. Every Mouth Must Be Fed consists of a five phase cycle developed over several months and involves five pairs of artists. Each phase investigates a specific segment of the food production chain — sowing, harvesting, transformation, service, celebration — through a dialogic relationship that each pair of artists will develop with each other and with the laboratory participants.Stemmed by the need shared amongst its founders to offer an alternative way of experiencing art, it has been – since its creations in 2015 – Pane Per Poveri’s mission to investigate possibilities of art fruition that revolve around horizontality, sustainability and active engagement with the areas of interventions and the communities that inhabit them.
Every Mouth Must Be Fed rethinks the sense of contemporary togetherness and considers the rite of hospitality, manifested through commensality, as a social act to be explored and analysed in its own cultural and political aspects. As much as the final realisation of the active canteen is the aim of a future project by Pane Per Poveri, Every Mouth Must Be Fed intends to activate a research about food seen as an essential interface between art and life.&nbsp; The artists involved in Every Mouth Must Be Fed are invited to participate in an open discussion about the topics at the core of the project. Five pairs of artists are given the assignment to lead the laboratories and trigger a brainstorming and open discussion with the participants on the political implications of raising communal, alternative ecosystems.Every Mouth Must Be Fedpresented by Pane Per PoveriMarch - June 2021

	PANE PER POVERI

Pane Per
Poveri takes off from the necessity to acknowledge the inclusive nature of art
and establish it outside of the elitist attitude that more and more in the
course of time the system that represents it, has developed. Through art and
creativity much can be done on a social level, but the superstructures existing
in the system risk corrupting this approach and reducing the use of such a
powerful tool as creativity, to a failed attempt to decorate reality. Pare Per
Poveri works together with artists and cultural workers to give an alternative
possibility to those who need a space of free engagement with art, a space open
to everybody where the experience and the fruition of art is unfolding on a
horizontal level with less restrictions possible: art as a benefit of all
people.

Embracing people’s everyday negotiations with - and evasions of - the mechanisms of power, PPP occupies a specific location as a temporary meeting point for beautiful strangers willing to surrender to unknown personal geographies and open to mutual understanding, sharing and compassion. PPP's modus operandi is that of a loosely controlled experiment with space for unlimited improvisation, ephemeral performative gestures of resistance and humble interventions. It’s a slippery slope of friendship building, accepting the possibility of failure in an attempt to bring together, if only for a moment, those excluded and/or forgotten by the powers that be.

First realized in Venice, Lido at the site of Teatro Marinoni in May 2015, during the opening days of the 56th Venice Biennial, PPP draws its title and ethic from one of the street curiosities of the old city of Venice, namely, small slots in the walls of the houses and churches, mailboxes of a sort with metal doors and an inscription: “Pane per i poveri” - bread for the poor. Some can still be found in Venice, devoid of the function they used to have in the middle ages, when well off Venetians would leave bread crusts or money for those in need. The initial PPP, a 72-hour event held in the complex of the abandoned Teatro Marinoni, tried to transpose this social practice from the past to our time, providing those in need (of art) with a larger space, a larger crack in the walls of contemporary Venice, on the fringes of the Biennial’s “sacred” exhibition venues. Adopting the playfulness, curiosity and improvisation of 16th century Commedia dell’Arte on one hand, and the 20th century legacy of Fluxus and Happenings on the other, PPP was conceived around a vague scenario to engage and nurture this environment as a site for inspiration and companionship. The three days event spontaneously produced and presented the work of more than hundred participants, artists and non-artists alike, in situ. As art itself is supposed to also exist apart from rules and established structures, it has been PPP ambition to transfer this freedom and to create a place where not only the production of art, but also its presentation and perception could be achieved with the least restrictions possible – whether those be personal or time-related. In Venice the events and the participating artists were announced as a unique happening, with no official line-up or planned time schedule to bring art to anyone at any time. The aim of the project was to create a constant flux of running activities, a kind of comfort zone where creativity and lifestyle was developing as the day was unrolling.

During the days in which Pane Per Poveri was happening on the Lido in Venice, Hanna Hildebrand and Matthew Antezzo, captured performances, interviewed participating artists and documented the artworks that were part of the project. But most of all, they were able to follow the process during its evolution, with no filters and no script. The result of this footage is a film by two artists about what happened in Lido during that unique moment of experimentation. The documentary film “L’Uomo del Pane”, made in collaboration with PPP, was made as a record of the Venice festivities. It was presented in the second edition of PPP that took place in Istanbul during the preview of the 14th Istanbul Biennial in September 2015, produced in collaboration with S.I.N.E. and hosted by Sylvia Kouvali. The Istanbul edition of PPP opened up an intimate private space of a rooftop deck for any interested visitors to join this one night gathering of screening and performances, amidst the panoramas of the city.

The third stage of PPP in 2017 took place in Athens, following city's selection as a second site for dOCUMENTA 14. Athens developed the PPP story further: in a “bowl situation” of the skate park Latraac, built by architect Zachos Varfis and his numerous collaborators in the notorious district of Kerameikos, PPP was once again trying to extend the primary function of urban amenities to hopefully meet broader social needs. There, the Commedia dell’Arte and Fluxus ethos meets the collective spirit of local skateboarders, in line with the vision to build “low-impact, greener spaces that use current resources and actually create value in a neighbourhood”. “Cities are failing people by not providing imaginative spaces which nurture creative potential. It’s a necessity, not a luxury.” Dreams aside, the urgency of this vision requires design and support. The former is already in place, and the latter comes on the wave of surf spirit that all of us in the PPP project share. PPP got inspired by what has been invented in this city many years ago and decided that the best way to roll there was to give to the artists invited the possibility to experience and use the entire city as a stage for their "drama". PPP - Athens has been spread all over the city using the skatepark as the main venue for the event.*Photo Series from Athens 2017 by Hanna Hildebrand

In cooperation with the Victoria Square Project, the artist Eleonora Meoni as a PPP representative and the interdisciplinary studio Endboss, designed and realized a small skate park in winter 2017/2018. The park is part of the Souzy Tros Art Canteen, a project of the Greek artist Maria Papadimitriou, started in 2016 as a social art project to revive Eleona's inhospitable neighborhood and for the children of the largest refugee camp in the immediate vicinity. In addition to the skate lessons offered there by Free Movement Sakteboarding, Eleonora and Maria also organized an artistic program with artist residencies and workshops.

In the first phase of sowing, Marta Orlando and Ninon Liotet started investigating the taxonomy of seeds and the monopoly of their selling, tracing a parallel with forms of control, classification and privatization experienced in our societies. As an alternative scenario, the artists imagined the seedlings, hybrid seeds that escape any taxonomic categorization, as a starting point of an expanded field of research that embraces queer ecologies, decolonization and intersectionality. In the video The awakening of the Transplants, by Clementine Roy, the artists staged a witchy setting where two scientist-looking individuals discover, collect and breed such seedlings, before planting them again in a fertile soil.
The video, imagined as a fictional tutorial on how to grow these mysterious, sensual and queering entities, was mirrored by the consequent installation realized by Orlando and Liotet at aquarium, where the artists created a vertical garden of hanging soil in which seeds previously found or gifted to the artists were collectively planted, growing and germinating throughout the run of the project until June.

AvantGardenLife succeeded the first duo of artists and started leading the phase of harvesting, that continued with the orchestration of Luigi D’Alessio. In her first workshop weekend, AvantGardenLife accompanied the workshops participants in a foraging bike ride in the Berlin forest of Plaenterwald, introducing the beneficial virtues of plants that grow around us and starting a reflection on how to subvert a human-centered narrative, towards a more empathetic and entangled approach to the livings that surround us. On the following day, the participants were conducted through the fermentation process of left-over vegetables, practicing a zero-waste policy.Over the followig session, AvantGardenLife and Luigi D’Alessio worked in collaboration. AvantGardenLife led a workshop where the medicinal qualities of herbs were explored through our senses, while Luigi D’Alessio shared his practice of bread making based on the 121-year-old sourdough that he received from a lady of Apulia. The preparation and tasting of the bread was accompanied by texts on socio-historical notes on bread baking and on the value of sharing. The two also discussed about their area of expertise, herbalism. As the two artists come from very different backgrounds - having one pursued an academic course of study, and the other learned absorbing from popular culture and traditions in the south of Italy - their knowledges in comparison has been an interesting and enriching exchange.

Artists:Marco Bruzzone
Darius Mikšys
<img width="546" height="584" width_o="546" height_o="584" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0679e791991ccb7b74a04cad57b5a74ae488328dcef6d9c0d012cd8344e95011/updated-calendar-27.png" data-mid="106121554" border="0" data-scale="42" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/546/i/0679e791991ccb7b74a04cad57b5a74ae488328dcef6d9c0d012cd8344e95011/updated-calendar-27.png" />

Bruzzone and Mikšys reflected on the plurality on transformative mechanisms that manifest themselves around us: plants and animals that become nourishment for the human body, (chemical) mutations in plants and organic livings, and the transition from the single to the collective, social body were just some of the mutative shifts that were investigated by the duo.

Bruzzone and Mikšys dedicated the first weekend of their phase to the preparation and arrangement of the two events that would have taken place the following week, „A Pound of Underground“ and the Matango Procession.
Having set up a screen printing station, the artists invited the participants to bring clothes, bags and other fabrics to be printed with the logo of the upcoming Matango Procession: a mushroom, symbol of entanglement and adaptability, that transforms into a closed fist, symbol of resistance.

A Pound Of Underground took place on Thursday, April 29th: inspired by a book that portrayed the world from a fish’s perspective, read by Bruzzone during a staying in Norway, the event unfolded as a theater play by and for potatoes.
The root vegetable has played an important role, if not marked, some major turns of human history: from being exported following the landing of Europeans in the Americas, to helping populations during famines, or condemning them to starve during their shortage.
In A pound Of Underground, two potato puppets playing the moderators of a talk show present and quibble with their three guests over the ontological status of potatoes and possibilities of community and aggregation.
The audience, as well as passers-by, were invited to assist to the play through the windows of aquarium, from an auditorium set up for the occasion on the sidewalk of Skalitzer Strasse.

On Friday 30th, the artists set up Matango, a silent demonstration for a more sustainable way of living that unwound from Kottbusser Tor to Hasenheide Park.
As an artistic action with the artistic action, Darius Mikšys staged „Mind the Food“, a performance where the demonstrators were invited to carry one food item on top of their head as a symbolic tribute to plants and animals that lost their lives to become food for humans.
The demonstration ended in Hasenheide Park, where „Matango“ was screened. Japanese movie by Hishiro Honda from 1963, Matango addresses the topic of mutation in nature produced by humans and its backlash on people.
Effects of human behaviour, risk calculation and the unstoppable force of nature, as well as the awakening of the collective consciousness in communal events, were at the core of the procession.

SERVICE

<img width="636" height="693" width_o="636" height_o="693" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ce98258fb6b21c4b6ab1329c0ff0b140f52ded106b0d33bbef4cd562f131be14/4.Serving.png" data-mid="100789307" border="0" data-scale="35" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/636/i/ce98258fb6b21c4b6ab1329c0ff0b140f52ded106b0d33bbef4cd562f131be14/4.Serving.png" />

After the exciting interventions carried out by Marco Bruzzone and Darius Miksys during the phase of Transformation, the laboratories related to the phase of Service were characterized by a more analytical and reflective approach.

In line with the research she conducts in her artistic practice, Isabel Lewis engaged the participants in a reflection of the act of serving as a performative work where the body, interpreted as a political tool, helped to compose a number of creative and inspired serving scores.
The participants were invited to think and draft reflections on how to deconstruct and subvert such power structures, in favor of a scenario where serving could be used as an universal currency, well summarized by the motto „serving and being served“.

The participants had the possibility to concretely enact these reflections on Sunday 16th May at the field trip to Gerswalde. There, the group was led through a multi-sensorial workshop where smelling and gazing became the primary tool through which to investigate the body of the other. Each participant was later invited to prepare a dish, choosing from a buffet organised for the occasion, and offer it to another person, while waiting to be offered the same courtesy: an act of generous giving and receiving, which had the effect of upturning the position of the server and the served, resulting in a horizontal sharing opportunity. In the final part of the day, Lewis introduced to the group the soon-to-be-launched project she has been developing with Dirk Bell and Thomas Bullock, „13 boxes“, an exercise in the flourishing of culture both agricultural and creative.

On the following weekend, Isabel Lewis continued her investigation on the exchangeable roles involved in the service phase by staging a tea ceremony hosted, at turns, by the laboratory participants.
During the same days, the attendants could take part in a ceramic painting workshop orchestrated by Liz Craft. For her participation to Every Mouth Must Be Fed, Craft created tutorials on how to paint on ceramic, her field of expertise; the audience was then invited to follow the instructions provided and recreate on plates a selection of images the artist had previously chosen — spiderwebs woven by spiders under the effects of different substances.
The material produced collectively during these days, plates as well as serving scores, will be used in the approaching final celebrative days of the project.

The chapter of celebration, the fifth cycle of workshops that closed Every Mouth Must Be Fed, was supervised by the invited artists Kira Lillie and Franziska Lantz and unfolded as a reflection and enacting of different celebrative moments and rituals.

On June 9th, Kira Lillie invited the workshop participants and the contributing artists to an open discussion on the meaning of celebration, a reflection over personal perceptions of what is a safe space and on how to create one that serves as many individuals as possible. The considerations carried on by the participants were noted down and became research material for the development of further steps of the project.

Franziska Lantz orchestrated the workshop of June 19th, where the participants where guided through a research on spontaneously generated sounds and rhythms with the help of non-musical instruments and object trouves, a practice that permeates Lantz’s artistic production. The aim of Every Mouth Must Be Fed to connect with the communities of Kottbusser Tor, found here the precious support of the group running the Kotti Shop of Adalbertstrasse, where the workshop took place: a space established to serve and engage with the residents of the historically and socially meaningful building above it.

On June 20th, Every Mouth Must Be Fed participated to the „Soul For Food“ market organized by Arts of the Working Class: on this occasion, in line with the researches conducted up until that point, Kira Lillie designed a celebratory space where visitors could experience a ritualistic moment of meeting characterized by the avoidance of over-structures, &nbsp;while Franziska Lantz accompanied the presentation of fun food and special drinks with a live presentation of her Sounds Escapes.

On Thursday 24th the present, participating artists set up different laboratory stations in the rooms of aquarium, each dedicating themselves to the production of their contribution for the final day of the project: visitors were invited to visit and engage with the various activities going on in the space.

The day of Friday 25th was dedicated to bread baking thanks to the precious collaboration with Baking Future, a project addressing the value of communal, practical doing. An mobile oven produced by Baking Futures was installed on the sidewalk of Kottbusser Tor very close to the aquarium, where, assisted by the help and firing expertise of David Moritz, Luigi D’Alessio had the chance to bake breads and a series of loaves shaped as breasts that would have been part of an intervention by Valentina Karga on the final day of the project. The event unfolded as an open demonstration and as a catalyzator in the bustle of Kottbusser Tor: a meeting point that could accommodate the curiosity and engagement of passers-by and local residents.

Kira Lillie, in the meanwhile, made use of the oven for a dinner that would have taken place that same evening in the rooms of aquarium: the gathering was designed as a multi-sensorial dining experience dominated by playfulness and simplicity, that would also serve as a bridging event to the following day, the last one of the project.

THREADERS
Viron Erol Vert&nbsp;is an artist whose personal, multicultural background plays a key role in his practice.

For his contribution to Every Mouth Must Be Fed, Vert took inspiration from the tradition of street vending in Turkey, his homeland.
Street vending is characterized by stands placed on the sidewalks of busy streets: the stands often consist of a wooden support that is easy to flip and carry, as well as from a sheet of fabric, on which the sellable goods are displayed, that can be quickly wrapped up in itself. The ephemerality of the structures&nbsp;aims to facilitate a getaway for when these spontaneous and unlicensed markets are interrupted by the police.

Reflecting over the spontaneity, structure free resiliency of these gatherings, that somehow reflect the same qualities of Pane Per Poveri, Vert decided to develop a clothing piece that resembled the structures seen in Istanbul. Designed as a wearable long apron with a wooden tray in front and one in the back, with food and seasonings presented on the latter, the twelve pieces produced intended to facilitate a shared moment of commensality: the act of serving yourself, creating your own plate that stands in front, while at the same allowing someone else to benefit of the goods you offer on your back — serve and be served, as stated by a phrase that was developed and broadly resonated during the last months of Every Mouth Must Be Fed.

The pieces, developed in collaboration with Philip Wiegard and thanks to his knotting expertise, were worn both by the present contributing artists and by visitors during the final, celebrative day of the project.
